What a greens powder is, and is not
A greens powder is a dried blend of vegetables, grasses and algae. It can be a handy addition to a smoothie, but it does not replace whole vegetables, which provide fiber and variety that a scoop of powder usually lacks.
Read the ingredient list
- Common ingredients: spinach, kale, spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, barley grass and alfalfa.
- Avoid mystery blends. A "proprietary blend" that does not list each amount makes it hard to know what you are paying for.
- Extras. Some products add caffeine, herbal extracts, probiotics or enzymes. The more extras, the more things to check against your medications.
- Sweeteners and sodium. Compare these between brands, especially if you watch your sodium intake.
Quality and safety
- Choose products tested by an independent lab. Some algae and grass ingredients can pick up contaminants from where they are grown.
- If you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, ask your doctor first, because greens can contain vitamin K.
- Check cost per serving, and keep in mind that some brands list multiple scoops as one serving.
Making it taste better
- Start with half a scoop to get used to the taste.
- Blend it with fruit, yogurt or a milk of your choice, since it tastes strongest in plain water.
- Use a shaker or blender, as the powder can clump when stirred.
